# Enterprise CentOS Migration Planning Guide

> A step-by-step framework for choosing a CentOS alternative and safely migrating enterprise Linux applications on a self-managed VPS.

With CentOS Linux 8 having reached End of Life (EOL) and CentOS 7 following closely, system administrators face a critical decision. What is the best alternative to CentOS for migrating an enterprise Linux application on a self-managed VPS?

This guide breaks down the strategic choices, highlights the practical migration steps, and details how to execute a safe transition on Evevps's unmanaged infrastructure.

## Step 1: Choosing Your Successor (AlmaLinux vs. Rocky Linux)

For environments reliant on RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) compatibility, the two leading successors are AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux.

### AlmaLinux

* **Backed By:** CloudLinux OS
* **Ideal For:** Hosting providers and web agencies (cPanel/CyberPanel natively support it).
* **Update Cycle:** Extremely fast patching (often within 24 hours of RHEL).

### Rocky Linux

* **Backed By:** CIQ (founded by original CentOS creator Gregory Kurtzer)
* **Ideal For:** High-performance computing, enterprise backend applications, and scientific workloads.
* **Update Cycle:** Highly methodical, focused on absolute 1:1 bug-for-bug compatibility.

## Step 2: Pre-Migration Inventory

Before touching your live server, you must catalog your exact environment.

1. **Package Inventory:** Run `rpm -qa > packages.txt` on your current CentOS server.
2. **Custom Repositories:** Document any third-party repos (e.g., EPEL, Remi).
3. **Application Stack:** What versions of PHP, MySQL, and Nginx are explicitly required by your application?

## Step 3: Deploying the Test Environment

Do not attempt an in-place upgrade on your production server first. Instead, deploy a fresh VPS.

### Action Plan:

1. Spin up a new unmanaged VPS alongside your current setup.
   * *Time to provision: Most cloud providers (like Evevps) provision instances in \[PROVISION\_TIME].*
2. Select your target OS (AlmaLinux 9 or Rocky Linux 9) from the OS template library.
3. Complete the initial server hardening (SSH keys, firewall setup) before moving any data.

## Step 4: Rehearsing the Migration

Migrating an enterprise application involves a dry run.

1. **Data Sync:** Use `rsync` to mirror your `/var/www`, `/etc/nginx`, and database dumps from the CentOS server to the new VPS.
   * `rsync -avz /var/www/ root@new_server_ip:/var/www/`
2. **Re-establish Permissions:** Ensure SELinux contexts and user permissions match the old environment.
3. **Local Testing:** Modify your local machine's `hosts` file to point your domain to the new VPS IP.
4. **Validation:** Thoroughly test the application. Monitor your Nginx/Apache error logs and ensure database queries are executing without latency issues.

## Step 5: The Final Cut-Over and Rollback Plan

Once rehearsal is successful, plan the downtime for the live cut-over.

1. **Lower TTL:** 48 hours prior, lower your DNS TTL to 300 seconds (5 minutes).
2. **Maintenance Mode:** Put the live CentOS application into maintenance mode.
3. **Final Sync:** Run the final `rsync` and database import.
4. **Update DNS:** Point your A records to the new Evevps VPS.

### The Rollback Plan

Because you deployed a parallel server rather than upgrading in place, rolling back is as simple as reverting the DNS change. Your original CentOS server remains untouched until you are ready to decommission it.

## Conclusion

Migrating away from CentOS doesn't have to be a crisis. By utilizing high-performance, easily provisioned unmanaged VPS environments like Evevps, you can safely test and deploy your AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux successors without impacting live operations.
